1938: Liberal Republicans

In a historic political month let's do some straight-up political herstory.

Karl Mundt, accused by his opponent of not being liberal or progressive, insisting he is indeed a liberal Republican. And his slogans of "A New Day the American Way" and "A Fair Chance for a Free People" sure sound like TR's Square Deal and FDR's New Deal.

And he won! Into Congress a few days later, 1939 till his stroke in '69. A different political age.

It’s No-Theme November. Fun fact: this famed anticommunist admitted to attending communist meetings. Huron, S.D., Daily Huronite, 28 October 1938, page 7. Robert Wellman Campbell, "1938: Liberal Republicans," RSS Longa, 14 November 2024, PD via CC0 1.0.
