Panorama-rama!

It’s Authorial April; I’m plugging my book, Yellow More: A Rephotography Classic Revisited. Today, a big photo.

The book’s online multimedia include a grand panorama of Custer’s “Permanent” camp in the Black Hills. On top of William Illingworth’s 1874 photos I stacked Richard Sowell’s from 1973 and mine from 2016 and 2023.

A few notes:

  • Panoramas were a popular format in the Gilded Age, so it’s odd that Illingworth just barely missed shooting them so often.

  • Carl Loocke reshot this scene in 1929; I’ll add it when it enters the public domain in 2027.

  • To me, having added some rudimentary sound to panos, this now seems strangely silent. Hike to robertwellmancampbell.com > Gobstoppers > Nemo 2016 for an example.

An old Earthshots-style quiz question: was I shooting left to right, or right to left?

I’ll talk about this book on 22 June 2024 at the Journey Museum in Rapid City, and I invite you all.
