Easy-Cheesy Geodesy: A pole is a minute
For September we’re doing rules of thumb. Today is "telephone poles" (they're really power poles) as a measure of time.
Back in high school track we "ran telephone poles" out on the gravel roads— run one walk one, sprint two jog one— and took great joy in calling them fartleks. Decades later, walking those same roads, I realized that each pole takes right around a minute to walk. You think you're to your car, but no, hard to believe, you're still five minutes away.
And yes, I see the irony of this post, on me being slow to figure out time, being posted a day late. And I still take great joy.
